Embodiment / Arduino
Physical Computing Demo
We will look briefly at a phys comp demo. Files require Max and Arduino software.
Discussion:
We will talk about a little history — to contextualize the idea of embodiment. Slides are NOT on YouTube — or slide share.
Patches:
I have two new patches — they can be downloaded together. They are new versions of the linear-random and the linear-random-sequence patches. They SHOULD correct the error thrown when media without a FPS argument in the header is opened.
RUNTIME (might work — 6MB) and MAX environment.

Embodiment / Cameras as Sensors
Sensors — Part 1:
Today we will explore the use of cameras as sensors. For simplicity we will use built in laptop cameras, tho it is possible to use external cameras.
We will need to grab a few patches:
They are the linear_random patch from last week — which we will look at first. Then we will add some new twists (linearRandomSequence) and connect a camera (moveTrack) to the updated version.
You may also want to grab these additional tracking patches — they do not filter the camera data and are not connected to the playback patches we use — but they have some interesting properties.
In our next class we will look at Arduino microcontrollers and see how electronics fits in to the world of interactivity.
An alternate fix — make an Application!
In case the first version of this did not work on your platform — it may have trouble on a PC. If it did work, then ignore all of this.
Some people have had trouble dropping files and having them recognized by the system. If this is the case, try the following download.
You may still need runtime — but this version of the random_linear file is an application not a collective. Which, basically means its bigger. The file is an archive and is just under 7MB. So if you have a really slow connection this will take a few minutes.
Once it comes down, unzip it and open it — double click should do it. After dropping files, you may need to click on the menu once to get the first item into the movie object.
Check for errors in the MAX window and post them in the comments section here.
If you can drop files but don’t see anything and the patch is on (toggle above metro) and a playback mode other than off is selected (check the radio buttons) then make sure you have the latest version of Quicktime installed.
If it is still unhappy — email me.
